Prof. Dr. Stefan Henkler is Professor of Computer Engineering at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences (HSHL), where he leads the B.Sc. program in Electronic Engineering and contributes to research strategy and academic development in Systems Engineering and Digitalization. His research centers on model-based engineering of dependable, intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Building on his foundational work in the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 614 on self-optimizing systems, he focuses on formal modeling approaches that enable CPS to adapt autonomously while meeting safety and reliability requirements. His current work addresses the integration of AI-driven decision-making and cognitive behavior in CPS, particularly in application domains such as smart farming and mobility. This includes the use of digital twins and predictive AI to optimize real-time system behavior. He is project coordinator of AKI4KMU and the Virtual Institute for Networked Mobility (as part of digitalise_swf), and leads a work package on energy-efficient AI in the BMBF lighthouse project EKI. He previously coordinated the 5G-Landwirtschaft-ML project and supervises doctoral researchers in these areas. Prof. Henkler is a long-standing contributor to national and international communities in CPS and Embedded Systems. He is an active member of IFIP WG10.2, the German Informatics Society (GI), and has led multiple international events. From 2010 to 2014, he led the group 'E/E Architecture Analysis and Design' at OFFIS-Institute for Information Technology in Oldenburg. During his time at OFFIS, he contributed to numerous national and international research projects with leading companies in the automotive, aerospace, and automation industries. Notably, he served as project manager for the BMBF-funded initiatives SPES 2020, SPES_XT, and ARAMiS, and was an integral part of the architectural and modeling teams within these consortia. Prior to this, as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 614 (SFB614) 'Self-Optimizing Systems in Mechanical Engineering' at the University of Paderborn, he coordinated the overarching SFB614 B project 'Design Methods and Tools', led the subproject B1 'Design Techniques', and headed both the working group 'Software Engineering' and the interdisciplinary interest group 'Self-Optimizing Systems'. In recognition of his outstanding interdisciplinary research in software engineering and embedded systems, he received the ACM SIGBED/SIGSOFT Frank Anger Memorial Award in 2007. Prof. Henkler’s work is widely published in peer-reviewed venues, and he actively contributes to academic dissemination through reviewing, program committees, and scientific events.
